As human beings we all have basic needs in life but I strongly believe that in order to survive in this technological world reading is another essential need, it's our life-long tool. Reading brings wisdom to an individual and that is what we all must strive to foster in our young students. Children nowadays seem to be at war with books and others are in love with books. So how then can we as teachers avoid this horrific war? It is not a fight that we alone can pursue but it involves the student and the support of his or her parents. I always remember my high-school principal’s words at every assembly, please read every-day for at least 30 minutes, it makes you a smarter person. I have passed on this message to all my students. I have no idea if they actually do it but when I ask them about it, I get credible responses.
We as teachers are exposed to a dynamic variety of reading strategies for our students and it is our strong belief that it will aid in improving literacy levels in our schools. One very interesting strategy though for me is the integration of technology in the classroom. It seems to be a daunting task to implement at the primary level since it is somewhat time consuming but that’s the challenge in trying it. I have intentions of implementing some of these in the future since at present I have infants. Technology makes reading fun and interesting, it makes reading interactive and that’s what we need to do, make reading enjoyable.

ReplyDeleteHana,
ReplyDeleteThe statement "I strongly believe that in order to survive in this technological world reading is another essential need, it's our life-long tool." I strongly agree with this. I remember reading something similar in a book call "Future shock" by Alvin Toffler(not sure about the spelling) many, many years ago. I'm asking though is it really true to say that children are at war with books or is it the books we want them to read. I have realized that they like to read certain types of books like the comics and graphic novels(well at least the boys). It is our job to use these to engage them in the various other types of material especially in the content areas. It may even be a good idea to have some of these books availablte to them using the “Kindle”. This is a daunting task especially when you consider that we have to deal with a whole mass of people who are really unaware of the various strides that research has made in the areas of motivation with respect to reading.
I agree with all the things you stated in your post. Take care!!!!
Reading is essential with or without technology, but with technology it makes it more interesting cause they are natives of the technological world in which we now live. The kids we have today are not happy with the books that we give to them to use in acquiring knowledge. Teachers have to bear in mind that in order for students to become motivated to read and learn the material must be meaningful so that they can use what they learn in their practical lives. With the use of "Kindle" the students would be able to read any type and amount of books anywhere in the world so they would be no need for a physical classroom to do reading. In this country that is what the education technocrats should be focussing on and give our students the opportunity to be on par with the rest of the world.
